The Dangers Of Electrical Repair

Many electrical problems constitute the need for immediate service from a licensed electrical contractor.

It pains us to see people hurt by everyday events that are easily preventable. If you ever need an emergency electrician, we strongly urge you to work with Abilene Electricians who value safety above all else.

How Can You Keep Yourself Safe?

There are countless tips and tricks we'd love to share with you to keep yourself safe to prevent needing an emergency electrician altogether.

The use of electricity has become an integral part of our lives and we want it to stay that way. Here are our most effective tips on how you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe in the presence of electricity:

  1. Never handle any electrical product with or around water:

Electricity can conduct (flow) through water in the same way it flows through metallic wires. Water contains both salt and microscopic fragments of metal that allow this to take place.

Our bodies are made up of at least 50% water. See what we're getting at here? If you come in contact with electricity with wet hands, that current will run through both the water and your body.

You can prevent this type of electrocution by making sure your hands are thoroughly dried before ever interacting with any equipment that requires electricity to properly function.

2. Never overload outlets:

It's easy to think that you can get away with plugging as many appliances into the same outlet at once.

This is especially true with the all too common usage of extension cords. Overloading an electrical outlet can result in electrocution or fires due to overheating.

If you need to have a lot of appliances used in the same area, be diligent in unplugging the ones you aren't using before plugging in the ones you plan to use.

3. Install GFCI Outlets:

Have you ever noticed an outlet cover with red and black rectangles, that outlet is equipped with GFCI protection.

A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) can help prevent electrocution where water may accidentally come in contact with electrical circuits. Because of this, they're often found in kitchens and bathrooms.

A GFCI can detect when a human body has received a shock and immediately shut off the power before the individual can get electrocuted. This incredible yet simple technology has been seen to reduce the amount of deaths due to electric shock annually.
